Working with communities to target areas of low tree cover and high pollution in the capital

It’s great to see these beautiful blossom trees planted for our residents in Evelyn to enjoy. The past couple of years have shown us how important reconnecting with nature is and I would love to see Communities Blossom right across the borough!
— Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham

Residents in one of London’s most densely populated areas enjoyed blossoming trees on their doorstep last spring. During winter 2021-22, STfL teamed up with Lewisham Council, the National Trust and local residents to deliver Communities Blossom, a tree planting programme that will provide greener spaces in Deptford.

67 trees have been planted in Evelyn ward on streets outside shops, homes as well as inside primary schools.

Watch this space for Lewisham Blossoms happening on a street near you early 2023; STfL is planting more street trees in New Cross, working again with local residents, schools, youth centres, the National Trust and Goldsmiths University.

Residents and visitors are so happy to see trees go into our green spaces and it is already bringing our ‘covid fractured’ community back together. The whole feel of the area has been lifted into a more natural environment and more people here are now realising the importance of trees.
— David Almond, member of the Tenants Resident Association, Pepys Estate, Deptford

We are delighted to be working with STfL, Lewisham Council and local residents to plant trees in a place that has a special link to the formation of the National Trust. Our founders recognised the importance of access to nature and greenery for people’s wellbeing which is at the forefront of our work in London today.
— Cathy Newbery, Project Manager London Programme, National Trust
